Why the hell would you order a titanium wedding ring?

This is another common question I get in the showroom.

Titanium is the sports model of rings. It’s light, it’s durable, it’s affordable.

It always amazes me just how different metals can be.

Sure, you can build a jet engine out of titanium thanks to its amazing properties, but if you grab a metal door handle, you’ll probably mark the ring.

That is a surprising fact to most people who think it is scratch proof. The thing is, the same is going to happen to a $2000 platinum ring. Spending more money doesn’t get you a more durable ring. Titanium is relatively cheap because we’re lucky to have a lot of it on the planet, it simply comes down to supply and demand. There was a time when aluminium was an extremely expensive, precious metal. Now we drink beer out of it and throw it in the bin, but I digress.

So why get a titanium ring?

  • It is very affordable, we charge $400 for a custom made titanium ring, wheres the same thing in platinum would cost $1500+

  • The pricing is flat rate. $400 allows a ring to be made in any width, any thickness and any design. Precious metal rings can cost significantly more if they’re made wider for example.

  • No tarnish, no rust, no skin allergies, no problems swimming.

  • It is tougher than white gold or platinum. You’re less likely to get deep scratches or dents on a titanium ring.

  • The colour is almost identical to raw 18 carat white gold.

  • To a good eye, it has a very slightly golden warm colour tone. This can be clearly seen on the Guggenheim Museum’s titanium cladding.

Why shouldn’t you get a titanium ring?

  • If you think an object feels cheap if it’s light weight.

  • Resizing options can be limited. These can only be adjusted by expanding or compressing the ring, allowing about 1 full size change in either direction.
