The Uniform Black Story

To start off with, it’s important to know that Uniform Black is not a big company, it’s not even a small company. It’s one person with some external specialists.

Rhett

Owner / Ring maker

I started the first iteration of the business in 2010.

With a background in computer science, a passion for design and engineering, I noticed a distinct lack of attention given to the niche of men’s wedding rings.

After beginning as an online store for years, a tiny proof of concept store was initially opened on Little Collins Street in Melbourne (it’s now used by the clothing store next door for their mannequins, that’s how small it was).

The amount of interest was surprising. At this point I was not making the rings myself, rather I was ordering them from manufacturers (which is how almost every other major store does it these days).

The next iteration was a larger shopfront in Yarraville. At this point I started the transition to making the rings myself, beginning with titanium. It allowed full customisation of the ring by the client.

I am entirely self taught and have never had any jewellery training. I see this as a good thing.

I haven’t been taught the same ways of every other traditional jeweller, which forms a narrow way of thinking.

I created my own way and decided to take an engineering approach to ring making. I purchased my first lathe and began machining my own rings.

After 4 years in Yarraville, I moved my operations to an ex cricket bat factory turned townhouse in Seddon.

I invested in better equipment, outfitted the townhouse into a unique combination of by-appointment showroom/workshop. Expansion into making traditional metal rings like platinum, gold, silver was natural.

I’m a facilitator and am open to all sorts of ideas. Don’t feel limited to what you see on my website.
